Norilsk Nickel may close a Nickel plant

A Nickel plant, which is a part of the Norilsk Nickel’s Zapolyarny subsidiary, may be closed because of its unprofitability, Norilsk Nickel’s General Director, Vladimir Potanin reported in an interview to the Vedomosti.

  • The possibility of the Nickel plant closure has been discussed for a long time and a lot. The added value of the production, made by the plant, is small. But this plant can’t be upgraded. There are unhealthy and arduous working conditions at the plant, its ecological problems became the talk of the town. In addition it is unprofitable and gives an inadequate contribution in prime cost and consumes too much of electricity…So, it should be closed. This will allow us to decrease the unprofitability and prime cost, solve the ecological problem, the problem of the hard work, to decrease the electricity consumption and thus to reduce capital investments into power engineering, - Vladimir Potanin noted.
