Anti-Russian Energy Union. Why does Europe do that?
On March 20, President of the European Council Donald Tusk said that leaders of 28 EU member states approved the Commission's proposal on energy alliance and strengthening supervision of the gas deals, as well as the formation of the energy market. The EU consumes 53% of energy from foreign suppliers. According to the European Commission, the daily cost of foreign energy sources, supplied in the EU, is about $1.166 billion. The European Council voted to increase the transparency of the EU gas market, "so that suppliers couldn’t abuse their position, weren’t able to violate the EU legislation and reduce the energy security of the Union".
"The bulk of the contracts with our main supplier - Russia – was signed for more than 20 years. This undermines our energy security, stability of the market. On the contrary, if gas is supplied from different vendors on flexible contract terms, that's good, "- said the President of the European Council Donald Tusk.
The decision on EU Energy Union was supported by Denmark, which is called the leader of the European Union on the use of renewable energy sources. Copenhagen made a proposal as soon as possible to switch to "green" energy to reduce the dependence on Russian gas. For example, in Denmark about 43% of electricity are generated due to wind. In five years, the country's authorities want to increase this figure to 55%.
