Russia plans to offer Japan to develop together oil and gas deposits at Southern Kuril Islands

 

Russia plans to offer Japan a joint project on the development of oil and gas deposits near the Far East. The authorized representative of the President of Russia in the Far Eastern Federal District V. Ishaev told the Japan’s mass media. It will be the first case when Moscow has offered such a project. It might become a part of the economic partnership on which the parties agreed in February 2011.
Japan considers the Southern Kuril Islands to be its territory. Meanwhile Russia emphasizes the indisputability of its right for the Southern Kuril Islands. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia says that the sovereignty of Russia over the Southern Kuril Islands is based on the results of the 2nd World War, stated in the international and legal terms in the Crimean agreement of 3 countries in the issues of the Far East as of February 11th 1945, Potsdam Declaration as of July 26th 1945, San-Francisco peace treaty as of September 8th 1951 and legitimized article 107 of the UN charter.
