The EC has project of safeguard actions in gas, oil and nuclear security fields
Yesterday the first progress in resolving the gas dispute between Moscow and Kiev was made at the talks Russia – the Ukraine-EU. According to the European Commission, the Ukraine will transfer an advance in the amount of $2 billion on Thursday, and will hold talks on the decrease of the price on Friday. But Kiev, in fact, it denied the report, stated only that negotiations would continue. A new strategy of energy security, prepared by the European Commission, should rid Europe of similar problems. The Kommersant was familiar with the document. It concerns not only gas, but also oil, oil products and nuclear fuel, it is anti-Russian, but doesn’t contain any new recipes.
The next round of negotiations that should resolve the problem with the supply of Russian gas to the Ukraine took place in Berlin yesterday. EU Energy Commissioner Guenther Oettinger, the Energy Ministers of Russia and the Ukraine, Alexander Novak and Yuriy Prodan and head of Gazprom Alexei Miller took part in it. As a result, late in the evening, Mr. Oettinger announced that Kiev would transfer $2 billion to Gazprom on Thursday, however not in debt, but as a deposit for future deliveries. Thereafter, another round of talks, during which the possibility of reducing the gas price for the Ukraine will be discussed, will be held on Friday. If the parties agree, Gazprom will be able to get $500 million more on June 7th, also as a deposit.
