Russia has plans in the southern direction of gas export

The southern direction of gas export stays important for Russia despite of the shutdown of South Stream, V. Putin said.

Mr. Putin said that the realization of South Stream turned out to be blocked by the position of the EU Commission. But anyway Russia is looking for opportunities to find a new route for pumping in this direction.

The President reminded that in February Gazprom, Edison and DEPA signed a memorandum of understanding. According to the document, Russia may construct a gas pipeline which will be connected to the underwater pipeline Poseidon planned in the Ionian Sea.

Mr. Putin said that Russia has been a reliable gas supplier for Greece for 20 years already and will stay such for at least another decade. Gazprom takes into account in its plans the intention of Athens to become a gas hub in the Balkan region.

In general, according to the President, Russia stands for diversification of energy supply which will increase the reliability of supplies and energy safety in Europe. Russia is ready for a dialog with the EU upon the forming of the energy alliance.
