Sakhalin Energy to deliver 16 extra lots of LNG to Japan in 2012, governor

Sakhalin Energy, the operator of Sakhalin-2, will supply 16 additional lots of liquefied natural gas, produced at the only LNG plant in Russia, to the Japanese electro-generating gas companies in 2012. The governor of the Sakhalin region A.Khoroshavin said about it at a conference “Oil and Gas in Sakhalin”.  There has been delivered 11 extra lots of Sakhalin LNG to Japan in 2011.

“Japanese energy companies are interested in an expansion of LNG consumption volume. The increase of the demand of Japan for gas is owing to a turning away of the country from nuclear power after the accident at Fukusima. Taking into consideration that the Japanese nuclear power industry was the world third most powerful it is a serious step towards changing of the global energy system in the Far East and a shift of potential energy sources towards oil and gas,” the governor said.

Khoroshavin said Sakhalin is able and it must play an important role in providing of global energy safety in the region amidst such conditions. The shareholders of Sakhalin Energy are Gazprom (50%), Royal Dutch Shell (27.5%) and Japanese Mitsui (12.5%) and Mitsubishi (10%).

In February 2009 within the framework of “Sakhalin-2” there was launched the first plant in Russia on an output of liquefied natural gas of 9.6 million tons of production capacity a year.

The total cost of “Sakhalin-2” makes up about $20 billion. The deposits Piltun-Astokhskoye and Lunskoye are developed within the framework of the project. The recoverable resources of the deposits are assessed at 150 million tons of oil and 500 billion cubic metres of gas.
