Latest round of the negotiations between the Ukraine, Russian and the EU fail

Russia and the Ukraine haven’t agreed to resume gas supplies, despite an agreement in principle of leaders of the "Northern Four" last week. The EU hasn’t found money to pay for gas for the Ukraine, and proposed to introduce a European mediator in the supply chain. But this option doesn’t satisfy Gazprom. The lack of funds and the impending change of the negotiators from the European Commission may postpone the resolution until the end of the year.

Gas talks between Russia and the Ukraine through the intermediary of the EU have failed again. Moscow didn’t hide - the main cause of the failure was the fact that Brussels hadn’t been able to find $1.6 billion for Kiev, which it would use to buy gas from Gazprom for prepayment. A week ago, President Vladimir Putin said after the talks with the German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Francois Hollande that the Europeans could pay the Ukrainian gas debt by providing a bridging loan or organized guarantees of the European Central Bank. But until now, none of the EU official persons has confirmed that the issue was considered. Thus, the European Commissioner Gunther Oettinger hinted that the Ukraine itself should find the money, including through the already allocated macroeconomic assistance from the EU. "In the next few days, we will do everything to help our Ukrainian friends to name a precise amount of payment, which can be used to pay for gas," - he said.
