Rosneft purchases an oil terminal in Murmansk
Rosneft maps out to revive the transshipment terminal, located at the territory of a former military shipyard, for its Arctic projects. In future, the terminal will provide for the shipment of 18 million tons of oil per year.
The United Shipbuilding Corporation has sold the fuel oil terminal to Rosneft, located at the territory of the Murmansk shipyard №35 (transshipment terminal for oil and oil products on base of “Polar terminal”) for 900 million rubles (22.8 million euros), Kommersant reports. The terminal is situated in the north of the Murmansk port, in the same district, where the Prirazlomnaya platform was for the completion last year.
During the Cold War the shipyard №35 (Sevmorput) repaired warships, including nuclear submarines.
The terminal was built in 2003-2004 for oil transshipment from railway tanks via a pipeline to tanks, moored at the pier, which protrudes 280 meters into the sea. According to the report “Transportation of oil from the Russian sector of the Barents Region”, published in 2009 by the institute "Akvaplan-Field" and the Norwegian Barents Secretariat, a new railroad overpass on 74 tanks was also built.
In 2006, the terminal was restructured for the transshipment of fuel oil. From 2008, the terminal stands idle.
Rosneft may apply to the version with the placement of storage tanker for the transshipment “board to board”, a source of the Kommersant reports, or it would have to almost completely rebuild the terminal. In this case, oil storage with capacity of 500 tons will be constructed. Implementation of these plans requires from 160 million to 1.5 billion rubles of investments, but it will increase the transshipment to 3-6 million tons by the 2013-2015, and then - up to 18 million tons annually.
At present, the total oil export through the terminals of the Kola Bay is about 12 million tons per year.
