Y. Lipatov: South and Nord Streams to provide energy security to EU

The South and Nord Streams will provide for the energy security of Europe. They are the basis of the energy supply to EU in the conditions of the growth in demand for hydrocarbons and the limits of own resources. According to the European specialists, the demand in gas in EU by 2025 will grow by 195 billion cubic meters and will equal to about 510 billion cubic meters a year. To meet such demands in EU all the existing and being constructed gas transport systems will be in use, the representative of the committee of the State Duma on energy, Y. Lipatov said on December 15th at the meeting with journalists of the leading newspapers of France (Le Point, La Tribune, Enjeux-Les Echos).

The importance of the diversification of the export routes of gas and the necessity of reduction of transport risks for Europe, according to Mr. Lipatov are evident: In connection with this the issue of Sea gas pipelines – Nord and South Streams – that will allow to directly connect the supplier and consumers of hydrocarbons and thus will make a contribution to the strengthening of the energy safety of the continent, acquired new significance. And the joint realization of the projects on construction of new systems of route gas pipelines is of vital importance for the architecture of the energy safety of Europe. Only it can provide continuous supplies of hydrocarbons not depending on the political situation in the transit countries.

At the meeting with journalists not only the issues of perspectives of gas supplies to EU, growing demands of Europe in energy suppliers were discussed but also the 3rd energy package of EU, changes of the fuel and energy balance in the world, perspectives of the South and Nord Streams and Nabucco and also the development of the atomic industry in the 2 countries, in EU and expansion of the company Rosatom in the world. Moreover, Mr. Lipatov told journalists about the main directions and results of the work of the Committee of State Duma of Russia on energy.
