Ownerless abandoned oil wells that may be dangerous for ecological safety of the Caspian Sea’s biological environment because of their catastrophic condition, are in the coastal zones of the Caspian Sea in Kazakhstan from the Soviet era; 56 of such wells are located in the Mangistau region. The country’s Government applied to subsoil users with a request to take part in the solution of this large-scale problem and balance the wells, located next to their oil fields. Karazhanbasmunai didn’t keep out; on October 13, 2007, 11 earlier terminated exploration wells were signed off to the enterprise by acts of the interdepartmental commission.
