Gazprom plans to ship gas to Armenia not only via Georgia

The issue of the supplies of Russian gas to Armenia was one of the key ones at the meeting of Gazprom’s head, A. Miller, with the Vice-PM, Minister of Energy of Georgia, K. Kaladze, yesterday in Luxembourg. Now gas is pumped from Russia to Armenia via Georgia. The parties discussed the alternative routes of pumping.

Gazprom considers an opportunity of gas supply to Armenia via Iran. For that purpose the variants of exchange operations are worked out with the Iranian producers. Mr. Miller confirmed the discussion of this issue with the Minister of Energy of Georgia.

Georgia receives gas in exchange for gas transit of Gazprom and thus covers 10% of its needs in gas. In 2014 Russia shipped 300 mln cubic m to Georgia. Georgia terminated the direct gas import from Russia in 2006 due to the escalation of political relationships between 2 countries.

Now Georgia started to speak about the perspective of growing gas supplies from Russia. In late September Mr. Miller and Mr. Kaladze discussed the variants of expansion of cooperation. However, it caused a contradiction of the opposition in Georgia which in October held 2 meetings opposing a possible expansion of Gazprom in the local market.
