Kazakhstan has started construction of the first self-elevating drilling platform

Tejiz Burylau LLC, a 100% subsidiary of KazMunai Teniz, and the consortium of Keppel Kazakhstan LLC and the ERSAY Caspian Contractor LLC have signed the contract for construction ‘turnkey’ of the first self-elevating drilling platform in the country. The project will be realized by Tejiz Burylau with support of KazMunaiGas.

KazMunai Teniz reports that the self-elevating drilling platform will be built in the Mangistau region with attraction of up to 1,000 people. It’s construction will be completed in Q1 2015. The drilling platform is meant for wells drilling with operational sea depth of 5-80 m. It fully corresponds to strategy of KazMunaiGas for aggressive geological exploration in the Kazakh sector of the Caspian Sea, strengthening of the position of the Kazakh companies in this market segment and achievement of the most efficient  and rational result in development of the shelf oil and gas reserves. Design documentation elaborated by Keppel FELS Ltd is coordinated with the official bodies of the state, and with the classificatory societies ABS and RMRS.

The systems of self-elevating drilling platforms are designed for operation in corrosion-active conditions, and in presence of hydrogen sulfide. The self-elevating drilling platform presupposes fulfillment of zero emission clause, i.e. full prohibition for waste emission to the sea.

In June 2012, KazMunaiGas and the Korean Consortium of the Caspian Oil Project  announced about completion of construction of the new submersible barge drilling platform Caspian Explorer for geological exploration in the Kazakh sector of the Caspian Sea, the Jambyl site, first of all. The customer is the Korean Consortium, and the general contractor is the South Korean Daewoo Shipbuilding& MarineEngineering Co. Ltd. Construction has performed since January 2011. The modules were assembled in different states and delivered via the Volga and the Don channel to Kazakhstan, where they began the assembly work at the barge corpus. The assembly contractor in Kazakhstan was the Kazakh company ERSAY Caspian Contractor LLC. The operator is Tejiz Burylau.
