Turkmenistan becomes the largest gas supplier to China, providing more than half of Chinese needs
The launch of a gas pipeline from Turkmenistan to China in 2009 allowed Ashgabat to achieve the desired goal to rid of itself of dependence on Russia and to find alternative markets for the huge energy reserves of the country. But at that time we didn’t know how dependent China would become on Turkmenistan.
According to the international oil and gas giant BP’s report, in 2012 Turkmenistan was the largest gas supplier to China, being ahead of its competitors and providing 51.4% of the China's import needs. Qatar, the second-largest supplier, sold three times less than China (16.4%). And with the start of extraction at the giant oil field Galkynysh, the supplies via the1833-km gas pipeline from Turkmenistan to China, which crosses the territory of Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan, will increase even more.
