Hungary makes attempt to drive South Stream project from the dead-lock

The Hungarian side has attempted to break the deadlock over the project of the South Stream construction - a gas pipeline bypassing the Ukraine. Local MPs adopted a law by which it will be possible to begin the construction of South Stream contrary to the rules of the EU Third Energy Package. However, according to Russian experts, the actions of Hungary will have a little impact. They can be regarded only as a psychological support of Russia. After all, in fact, in the case of apparent dissatisfaction of the EU the Hungarian side is likely to listen to Brussels rather than Moscow.

On Monday, as news agencies report, the Hungarian Parliament adopted a law that allows to speed up the construction of South Stream in the territory of the state, bypassing the rules of the European Union.
According to this law, companies, not passed the certification of the European Commission, can participate in the construction of the gas pipeline. This is contrary to the accepted rules of the EU Third Energy Package. 132 lawmakers voted for the document, supported by the head of the Hungary’s government Viktor Orban, 35 deputies rejected the amendment.
