Poland and Italy want new discounts from Gazprom, the Germans already drive a bargain.
The Polish PGNiG and Italian ENI - Gazprom's major customers - announced today that they would seek new discounts on Russian gas. ENI CEO, Paolo Scaroni stated in an interview with CNN, that his company will start commercial negotiations with Gazprom in the next few weeks and hopes to improve the conditions of the purchase.
The Polish gas monopoly PGNiG also stated that it expects to improve the contractual terms, but the negotiations with Gazprom will begin in November 2014, when the "window" for negotiation, provided for by the contract, opens.
In 2013 the PGNiG net profit decreased by 14% compared to the record level of 2012 achieved by reducing the contract price for Russian gas. In 2013 the profit amounted to 1.92 billion zloty ($ 630 million) against 2.23 billion zloty a year earlier, the company stated today. The decrease in profits is due to the low profitability of the gas trade, the futility of wells drilled in Poland and the write-off project of 420 million zlotys in troubled Libya.
