How will death of South Stream influence Azerbaijan?
The international energy community continues to discuss the sensational news that came out during the visit of the Russian President, Vladimir Putin to Turkey. South Stream won’t be constructed. Russia halts the South Stream gas pipeline project because of the Bulgarian sides attitude, the Russian President stated. "We can’t begin the construction in the sea as long as we don’t have a permission from Bulgaria. This is ridiculous to begin the construction in the sea, come up to the Bulgarian shore and stop. I think it is clear to all. Therefore, we will have to reconsider our participation in this project, "- Putin said at the joint press conference with his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
Then he expressed resentment over Brussels: "Taking into account the attitude of the European Commission, which is not conducive to the project realization, we believe that Russia can’t continue this project". Putin called the attitude of the EC unconstructive and not in the economic interests of Europe. According to him, the Commission not only doesn’t help, but hinders the project. "We see how barriers to its implementation are being created. If Europe doesn’t want to implement it, ok, it won’t be implemented,"- Putin said, added that the Russian energy resources will be redirected to other markets, including through the promotion and accelerated implementation of LNG projects. "Europe won’t receive such volumes, at least from Russia," - he added. "We believe that this is not in the economic interests of Europe and is detrimental to our cooperation. But this is the choice of our European friends. There is nothing special here, they are, after all, the buyers,"- said the Russian President.
