40-km section of Iran-Armenia gas pipeline to be bought by Gazprom

A 40-km section Meghri-Kajaran of the Iran-Armenia gas pipeline will be sold to the Russian company Gazprom Armenia, said the Armenian Deputy Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Ara Simonyan.

The owner of this section is the state-owned closed joint stock company High-voltage power lines and Gazprom Armenia rents this section of the pipeline. "We believe that it is much more effective when such costs of the energy sector are undertook by not the state, but a private company. The entire system of gas supply in Armenia is under the authority of Gazprom, there was no sense to leave this small 40-km section under the responsibility of unspecialized state-owned company. Why wasn’t this done at the time? Because, at the time we attracted a loan from the Iranian side for its construction. The Iranian side could provide a loan only to a public company, so High-voltage power lines of Armenia was involved. The construction was completed, the loan is repaid, and now it makes no sense to retain this small section,"- said Simonyan.
