In the near future development of shale gas fields can start in Russia. Draft agreements of the regions with Gazprom and Rosneft, where the main conditions of the shale gas and coal bed methane production for needs of the Trans-Baikal region and Buryatia are defined, were developed. But the gas monopoly opposes the development of shale gas fields, it plans to supply liquefied gas to the region.

On October 24 of 2013, the Governor of the Trans-Baikal region Konstantin Ilkovsky sent a letter to the Head of the Government Dmitry Medvedev, in which he asked to take into account “results of analysis of social and economic efficiency of production and supply of gas from unconventional sources during assessment of variants to supply gas to the Trans-Baikal region”. According to the information in the letter, methane resources at the Apsatskoye and Chitkandinskoye coal deposits exceed 80 billion cubic meters of gas. Signs of shale gas fields are also in the territory of the Trans-Baikal region and Buryatia.
