Gazprom in dispute with journalist of the Financial Times about South Stream

The official representative of Gazprom Sergei Kupriyanov has stated about the political background of the opposition to construction of the South Stream gas pipeline from the European Commission. Kupriyanov’s letter, in which he entered into controversy on the project evaluations, was published by the newspaper, the Financial Times.

"For a while the EU seems to be ready to shoot itself in the foot by blocking the project, which will increase its energy security and help Europe to meet the growing need for energy sources imports, without spending taxpayers' money," - wrote Kupriyanov.

Earlier, on August 25th, the newspaper published an article by journalist Guy Chaz, in which he stated that the South Stream project doesn’t have any economic logic and pursues political goals.

Kupriyanov says in the response letter that South Stream is one of the largest infrastructure projects in the world and the decision to build it was based on thorough economic calculations.
