Member of European Parliament: South Stream must comply with rules of the EU

The candidate for the post of European Commissioner for Climate and Energy, Miguel Arias Canete believes that the South Stream project can only be realized if it will comply with the EU legislation.

The European Commission tries to block the project, arguing that it doesn’t conform to the Third Energy Package, which prohibits companies, producing gas, to own main pipelines in the EU.

"In order to ensure energy security, we need to diversify our sources (of energy). We can’t depend on a single gas supplier. We need internal (energy) connections in the EU. We need to develop a Southern Corridor. It is clear that the creation of South Stream can’t continue until we ensure its compliance with all laws of the EU," - he said at the hearings in the appropriate committee of the European Parliament.
