Kiev wants to enter the “North-South” gas corridor

“Naftogas Ukrainy” is negotiating with potential LNG suppliers from the USA about the construction of an interconnector with Poland. It will allow it to pump gas into the Ukraine’s underground storage facilities from the Polish LNG-terminal in Świnoujscie. If such a scheme is realized, it will give the opportunity for LNG from the USA to enter the East European market and the Ukraine will gain a chance to enter the project of the “North-South” gas corridor which is considered a priority project in the EU.

In the process of the reforming of “Naftogas Ukrainy” Kiev is going to return to the idea of including its underground storage facilities into the EU’s project on the construction of the “North-South” gas corridor. The deputy chairman of “Naftogas Ukrainy”, A. Todiychuk, told Kommersant the company considers the opportunity of construction of the interconnector (a connecting gas pipeline) with Poland -with the capacity of 7-10 bln cubic m of gas a year. It will connect the Ukraine’s gas transport system with the LNG acceptance terminal in Świnoujscie which is to start operations this year. According to the top-manager, this project is interesting to the companies planning to ship LNG from the USA to the Eastern Europe. For them the Ukraine’s underground storage facilities are an opportunity to enter the region.
